“Taken—because someone felt something.”

The Last Light

40" X 30" | Oil on Canvas | 2025 | 29330
When you look at The Last Light by Lemuel Cunanan, it feels like you’re standing right inside the forest itself—dark, heavy, and muddy, like something terrible just happened. Maybe a landslide. You can almost feel the weight of it.
Then your eyes find that old tree on the side. Its roots are exposed, clinging to the earth like it’s refusing to let go. It’s been through a lot, but it’s still there—holding on. And right under it, there’s this old lamppost. Somehow, it’s unharmed. The light still burns, softly, like it’s protecting the path ahead. You can see where the land clears up, where it’s safe to walk again.
But here’s the thing—the tree is what kept that light alive. That’s the real story. The artist wants us to think about that—about what the trees protect, and what happens when we take them for granted. They’ve been standing for years, quietly shielding life around them, but they can’t fight back against greed. They’re strong, yes, but also fragile in the face of what we call progress.
