Anitun Tabu
48" X 36" | Oil on Canvas | 2023 | 27368
Anitun Tabu is a deity from the Philippines who is known for her influence over the wind and rain. She is said to be capricious and arrogant, and has been blamed by ancient Tagalogs for causing rain. Prior to colonial times, it was considered fortunate to get married in the rain as it was believed to please Anitun Tabu. In Zambales, she is known as Anitun Tauo and was once considered superior to other deities, but was demoted by their chief god Malayari due to her prideful nature. Despite this, people in Zambales still offer her pinipig or mamiarag during the harvest season.
