Jovan Benito
Jovan Benito is a contemporary Filipino painter celebrated for her vibrant, emotive depictions of everyday Filipino life. Born on April 12, 1982, in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, she grew up in the rural town of Pakil, where her early exposure to art came from her father, a sign artist who painted movie billboards. This early influence sparked her passion for drawing, which she pursued further after marrying Filipino surrealist painter Jerry Morada. Under his mentorship, Benito transitioned from assisting with school projects to developing her own unique artistic style.
Benito’s distinctive style features figures with rounded eyes, inspired by her pet dog, Chaka, aiming to convey a range of emotions. Her artworks often depict traditional Philippine modes of transportation and everyday scenes, rendered in a bright palette that exudes joy and nostalgia.
Benito’s works continue to resonate with audiences for their heartfelt depiction of Filipino life, blending classical influences with a contemporary aesthetic.
