Jess Santos
Jess Santos is a celebrated contemporary Filipino artist known for his vibrant and heartfelt portrayals of Filipino culture, family, and faith. Through his artwork, he captures everyday moments that highlight resilience, gratitude, and the warmth of community, resonating deeply with the Filipino spirit.
Artistic Journey and Style
Born in 1966 in Navotas, Rizal, Jess Santos developed an early interest in art and design. He initially pursued architectural studies at the Technological Institute of the Philippines but later shifted his focus to the arts, attending various art seminars to hone his skills.
Santos began his artistic career in 1996 and gained valuable experience working with established artists, including a significant apprenticeship that helped him refine both traditional and modern techniques. From 2004 to 2010, he worked overseas as a mural artist and prop/event designer, mastering techniques such as faux finishes and Trompe L’oeil. His innovative approach led him to coin the term “Filipinana Art Nouveau,” blending Filipino cultural elements with elegant, contemporary design aesthetics.
A major highlight of his career is the ceiling mural he painted for the Santa Monica Parish Church in Angat, Bulacan. This mural, a transmutation of Michelangelo’s iconic Sistine Chapel ceiling, earned him widespread recognition for his ability to blend classical inspiration with Filipino artistic sensibilities, demonstrating both technical mastery and cultural pride.
