Oliver Marquez

Oliver Marquez (born April 30, 1974) is a prominent Filipino visual artist recognized for his contributions to contemporary Philippine art. His work often reflects themes of cultural heritage, rural life, and personal narratives, expressed through styles ranging from modern contemporary impasto to expressionism and abstraction.

Early Life and Education

• Artistic Roots: Born in Angeles City, Pampanga, Marquez grew up in a family of artists who specialized in drawing wildlife and scales for tourist art.

• Relocation: His family moved to Malolos, Bulacan, following the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, an event that significantly disrupted his early artistic path.

• Technical Training: Though he aspired to study Fine Arts, financial constraints led him to enroll in a Drafting course at Bulacan State University in 1993.

Career Journey

• Hiatus: For over a decade, Marquez stepped away from professional painting to operate a sign-making business.

• Return to Art: In 2011, encouraged by a friend, he returned to the canvas with renewed focus. His comeback was marked by immediate success in national art competitions.

• Influences: He draws inspiration from Filipino masters such as Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, and Anita Magsaysay-Ho, as well as his love for folk rock music and the guitar.
