Eberle Catampongan
Eberle Catampongan is a celebrated Filipino artist known for his vivid and nostalgic portrayals of traditional Filipino life, culture, and architecture. Born on March 23, 1980, in Antipolo, Rizal, Catampongan pursued a degree in architecture at the Technological Institute of the Philippines. His architectural background is clearly reflected in the intricate depictions of rural structures and heritage homes that often appear in his paintings.
His journey into the art world was deeply influenced by the late Tony Mahilum, a respected historical genre painter—and also his future father-in-law. Catampongan’s relationship with Mahilum began when he met Mahilum’s daughter, Ana Lucia, as a teenager. Though Mahilum was initially hesitant about their relationship, Catampongan’s passion for art and commitment to learning eventually earned his respect. Mahilum became a mentor to him, nurturing his artistic development.
Catampongan describes his artistic style as “Filipiniana,” focusing on themes that celebrate Filipino heritage. His works frequently capture scenes from rural communities—markets, riversides, festivals, and homes—filled with life, emotion, and cultural richness. He is known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to evoke a strong sense of place and tradition.
One of his most recognized works is Pasko sa Nayon, a large-scale oil painting created for Pan de Manila’s 2018 Christmas campaign. The piece captures the warmth and spirit of a traditional Filipino Christmas, with imagery drawn from Catampongan’s own childhood memories—parols (lanterns), Simbang Gabi (midnight mass), and children singing carols.
His art has been featured in various galleries across the Philippines, including Art Circle Gallery and Nami Art Gallery. Notable works like Market Scene and Riverside Market continue to resonate with collectors and audiences for their authentic and heartfelt depiction of everyday Filipino life.
Through his work, Eberle Catampongan honors and preserves the cultural identity of the Philippines, offering viewers a glimpse into the values, traditions, and beauty of the Filipino way of life.
