Angelo Baldemor

Sculptor · Painter · Cultural Artisan
Born August 2, 1955 – Paete, Laguna, Philippines

Angelo Baldemor is a distinguished Filipino artist whose pioneering fusion of painting and sculpture has earned him wide acclaim in the local and international art scenes. Born in the woodcarving capital of Paete, Laguna, Angelo has deeply rooted his practice in the town’s rich folk traditions while pushing artistic boundaries with his signature creations—vibrantly painted wood sculptures he calls “paintures.”

Education & Early Life

Angelo began carving at the age of 10, immersed in the artistic legacy of his hometown and family, which includes his brother, National Artist Manuel Baldemor. He completed his primary education at Quinale Elementary School, pursued secondary studies at Eastern Laguna Colleges, and later trained in Fine Arts at FEATI University.

Artistic Practice

Baldemor’s work is defined by its seamless blend of form and color. His “paintures” bring to life rural Filipino imagery—fruits, rice grains, vegetables, flowers, and woven baskets—sculpted from native softwoods like batikuling and meticulously painted with bold realism. Each piece reflects his deep reverence for Filipino identity, craftsmanship, and everyday beauty.

Exhibitions & Achievements

Since the late 1970s, Angelo has mounted over 100 solo exhibitions, showcasing his work in major Philippine galleries such as Gallery One, Galerie Y, Hidalgo Gallery, and the Heritage Art Center. He has also been part of numerous group exhibitions including the Promdi series at Museo Orlina, joining renowned artists like Henri Cainglet and Ramon Orlina.

His numerous accolades include:

  • First Prize, Laguna Art Contest (1976)

  • Achievement Award for Visual Arts, Knights of Columbus (1991)

  • Juror’s Choice, Sculpture, AAP Annual Competition (1995)

Internationally, he represented the Philippines at:
