“Spoken for. But still worth admiring.”

Mayari

48" X 36" | Acrylic and Oil on Canvas | 2023 | 27414

In Tagalog Mythology, Mayari is known as the Moon goddess and is revered for her combat skills, hunting, strength and beauty. In old Tagalog myths, Apolaki and Mayari once had a disagreement over who should govern the earth. Apolaki wanted to rule the skies alone, while Mayari insisted on equal rights. They battled fiercely with bamboo clubs, and Mayari ended up losing one of her eyes. Apolaki saw the extent of the damage he had caused and agreed to rule the earth together but at different times. However, Mayari’s light is not as bright as her brother’s due to the loss of her eye. Despite only having one eye, Mayari is known for being the most beautiful deity in Bathala’s court.
