Manuel Baldemor
Manuel Baldemor, born on March 26, 1947, in Paete, Laguna, is a celebrated Filipino artist known for his diverse talents in painting, sculpture, printmaking, writing, and book illustration. His art captures the vibrancy of Filipino life, especially the culture and traditions of his hometown.
Baldemor graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from University of Santo Tomas – College of Architecture and Fine Arts
Artistic Style and Themes
Baldemor is best known for his stylized and geometric art, often infused with folk sensibility. His works depict scenes of rural life, festivals, and community togetherness. Drawing from Neo-Realism and inspired by artists like Vicente Manansala, Baldemor developed a unique visual language that resonates both locally and internationally.
Achievements and Recognition
Early Recognition: In the 1970s, Baldemor rose to prominence through detailed pen-and-ink drawings that showcased the daily life and charm of Paete. His murals “Paete I” and “Paete II” each won the grand prize at the Art Association of the Philippines competitions in 1972 and 1973.
International Exhibitions: These early accolades led him to represent the Philippines at the International Art Exhibition in Paris in 1973, marking the beginning of his global career.
UNICEF Artist: For over 30 years, his artworks have been featured on UNICEF greeting cards, reaching audiences worldwide and supporting charitable causes through art.
Global Residencies: Baldemor has served as an artist-in-residence in various countries, including France, Japan, Chile, Estonia, Switzerland, Portugal, and Singapore. He has exhibited solo in over 30 cities internationally.
Awards: Among many honors, he received the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1992, one of the country’s highest recognitions for contemporary artists.

Aside from visual art, Baldemor is also an accomplished writer and columnist. He has written extensively on Philippine culture and art, and has co-authored several books that explore Filipino traditions and heritage.
