Juvenal Sanso

Juvenal Sansó (1929–2025) was a distinguished Spanish-born Filipino modernist painter and printmaker whose career spanned over seven decades. Born in Reus, Catalonia, Spain, he moved to Manila at a young age, where he later studied at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts and the University of Santo Tomas.

Renowned for his distinct versatility, Sansó’s oeuvre evolved from the stark, dramatic intensity of his post-war “Black Period” into poetic, luminous expressions of nature, dreamlike coastal landscapes, and vibrant floral vistas. A multi-awarded artist with international acclaim spanning Europe, Asia, and the Americas, his works are celebrated for their meticulous technique, profound emotional depth, and a unique lyrical sensitivity that bridges Western modernist traditions with a deeply personal Filipino sensibility.
